A compassionate employee at Amberley Labels in Boston, who was awarded €500 from Coveris for his work in the local community, has donated his prize back to the children’s centre he has been helping.

Digital Supervisor Neil Stubbs was named ‘No Waste Champion’ for his work with St Thomas’ Children’s Centre by parent company Coveris as part of its group-wide sustainability strategy which is centred around its vision of No Waste.

Employees at any of the Coveris and Amberley Labels sites in the UK and Europe can submit ideas to help the company reduce waste and be more sustainable. Each month a winner is selected and awarded €500 as a prize.

Last year, a group of volunteers from Amberley including Neil built a new garden for St Thomas’ Children Centre, a children’s centre also based in Boston. The garden, which was designed by children at the centre, features a bug hotel and vegetable patch.

The centre has since been using the garden to teach children about where food comes from and the importance of healthy eating by growing fruit and vegetables. The children are also using the garden to learn about the lifecycle of plants by planting seeds and watching them grow.

Since building the garden, Neil has stayed in touch with the centre and goes back on a regular basis to help maintain the garden.

Neil said: “Building and maintaining the garden at St Thomas’ Children’s Centre is a great way for us to support the local community and provide educational opportunities for the children at the same time.

“It also gets the local area involved in Coveris’ sustainability journey, teaching the children about the importance of caring for our environment and wildlife.”

The centre plans to use the €500 donation to purchase some seeds, bulbs, and plants that the children will plant in the garden, and a gazebo to protect them from the sun whilst they are outside. Tools such as mini rakes and trowels will be purchased to help the centre maintain the garden, as well as gardening ornaments and sun catchers.

Emma Blanchard, St Thomas’ Children’s Centre’s manager, said “Neil’s donation to the centre is incredibly kind. With his Green Team from Amberley Boston, a fantastic garden was built for the children to teach the children about the environment, sustainability and how plants grow. To enhance the area further and teach the children more about plant lifecycles, we will use some of the money to buy seeds, bulbs, and plants that the children will plant and take ownership of. For all his efforts and kindness, we thank Neil immensely.”
